Relationship between indoor environmental quality and sick building syndrome: a case study of selected student’s hostels in Southwestern Nigeria

An improved indoor environmental quality (IEQ) is a major determinant of human comfort in an occupied space. The current cross-sectional study investigates the link between and sick building syndrome symptoms (SBS) emergence with case selected students’ hostels Nigerian private university. A quantitative research design method was adopted where 376 (n = 376) copies questionnaire were purposely administered to student’s occupants. mini meter also objectively used measure air temperature, relative humidity, velocity, lighting levels hostel rooms February March 2019. data obtained subjected descriptive analysis variance (ANOVA) inferential statistics using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0 version. findings revealed that students show SBS like tiredness, sensitivity odor, sneezing, blocked nose during their hostels’ occupancy. Meanwhile, objective measurement results showed average temperature 29.93 °C, 31.64 30.71 °C. Simultaneously, humidity values 79.00%, 72.06%, 81.01% monitored morning, afternoon, evening. ANOVA result established positive relationship poor IEQ condition stuffy nose, nausea. Therefore, it recommended facilities’ be mitigated through acceptable parameters increasing wellbeing, academic performance, reputation.
